It isn't true, of course. Mac-specific malware attacks are steadily on the rise. The situation may not be as bad as for Windows or Android, but common sense still dictates that you install antivirus protection on your Macs as well. Avast Security offers protection against malware along with a network security scanner, all for a cost of exactly zero dollars.

Avast also offers you phishing protection when using Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. This feature used to be tied to a Chrome extension, but now there's no need to install anything extra to flag suspicious sites if you attempt to visit them. The downside is the loss of a couple of features that came with that extension, such as website ratings and tracker blocking. (For the latter function, check our list of the best ad blockers.)

It would appear that Avast has joined the ranks of adware peddlers, as reader Fred Maxwell brought to my attention yesterday. Sometime around December of last year, a SafePrice option was quietly added to the avast! Online Security browser extension. This extension is available for Chrome and Firefox, but apparently not for Safari as far as I can tell.

The avast! Online Security extension is installed automatically in both Chrome and Firefox when avast! Free Antivirus for Mac is installed. The new SafePrice option, shown at right in Firefox, is enabled by default.

However, when I installed Avast on a test system, I did not see precisely what they claimed. I did see an Avast page load when I opened Chrome, and this page did mention SafePrice in a list of new changes. However, nowhere on that page was I given instructions on how to permanently disable it.

I also checked the license agreement that the Avast installer required me to agree to. Nowhere in that document was SafePrice mentioned, so a user who reads license agreements would have no idea that adware was being installed.

The official avast! blog page to which this article links has a comment from a Windows user who walks through the installation process for Windows on YouTube, and the video shows that SafePrice is installed on Windows as well.

I found I had installed Genio when looking at Avast and then found Safari would not load because of a problem with a Genio file clashing with Trusteer Rapport system. Raport directed me to The Safe Mac and the Adware removal Tool removed the Genio system. I will be taking great care to keep clear of Avast. Thank you for the Removal tool.

There are, of course, some remaining data left on your Mac. To remove them, check the Leftovers tab in the Uninstaller module. Here, select the leftover files and click Clean to let the app erase the unnecessary data from your Mac.

Note: It is very important to be sure to backup your system with Time Machine or alternative backup software (Carbon Copy Cloner) prior to installation and after verifying you have the requirements necessary to install and run adequately.

From time to time, like all things in IT, troubleshooting needs to occur with your installation(s) of Avast Antivirus. While the following list is not an exhaustive list, it is some of the most common issues we see in support along with the most common fixes. This article is intended to be an extension of the Installing and Managing Avast AV article, which should be gone over to ensure you have the basics of setting up for Integrated Avast Antivirus covered correctly. If this is for Avast Business Cloudcare support or another deployment of Avast, contact Avast Support directly as this is specifically for Barracuda RMM deployments.

When looking at the installation status in the Avast Dashboard and a device shows up as Pending Reboot, please Reboot that device. If the status does not clear there likely exists the reboot.txt file that needs to be deleted. It can be somewhat pesky to find at times, however, so please do the following:

Unfortunately, there appears to be an issue with some installations where the AVM policy server and an end device do not successfully communicate. The support and development team for Barracuda RMM has come up with a script to help remedy this.

After the script has run (this can take up to half an hour), go back to your Avast dashboard and the installs will be set as Failed. Now set to install again this should for another data collection for AV and update accordingly.

The third-party application that we are talking about is Aiseesoft Mac Cleaner. It is a professional and powerful app that you can use to uninstall any app and delete files related to the app on your Mac. So after uninstalling Avast apps, there is no junk file remaining on your Mac. Here is a step-by-step guide that you can easily follow. 2ff7e9595c
